Description

Letter written from Jacksonville, Oregon. Croke shares that he has visited all towns in southern Oregon, and advises creating a permanent missionary post with two priests. He complains of high expenses and shares that he has been given escort with Major Alvord and Jessie Applegate. He remarks on the ongoing wars between settlers and Indians as well as U.S. General Joseph Lane's attempts to make a treaty with local Native American tribes. He closes the letter stating that he has found few Catholics in Jacksonville and outlines his probable itinerary back to Oregon City.
Rev. James Croke (1827-1888) was a Catholic missionary priest who served in Oregon in the 1850s, reporting directly to Bishop Francis Blanchet of Oregon City, Oregon. This small collection consists of typed transcripts of letters from Croke to Blanchet concerning the details of his missionary work. The original letters are held privately.
