Rev. James Croke (1827-1888) was a Catholic missionary priest who served in Oregon in the 1850s, reporting directly to Bishop Francis Blanchet of Oregon City, Oregon. This small collection consists of typed transcripts of letters from Croke to Blanchet concerning the details of his missionary work. The original letters are held privately.
Letter written from Coos Bay, Oregon. Croke describes being tired of missionary tour, finding few Catholics in the area, and receiving a lukewarm reception from those he encounters throughout his travels. He comments on Applegate hospitality, his stay at Captain Kilburn, Winchester, and visit with Reverend Wilbur. Croke also expresses being obliged to miss Jacksonville because of Indian troubles, including active armed resistence by Native Americans towards settlers. He conveys the need to trade his horse upon his return to Winchester and describes his trip to Coos Bay via Scottsburg, on steamer Washington. He closes the letter by sharing that he is running out of money, outlining his prospects of Coos Bay and Empire City, and describing his plan to walk on beach to Umpqua City and return to Scottsburg.
