Description
  • Correspondence and newspaper clippings related to Dr. Dewitt C. Burkes and the Morningside Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Topics included advocacy for  S. 1027 and S. 1028, two senate bills that would help create a mental hospital with outpatient facilities in Alaska so patients would no longer have to travel to Oregon to receive care. There was also significant controversy over the quality of care and amount of profit made by Morningside hospital. Letters between Burkes, Morningside owner Henry Coe, the American Psychiatric Association, and others discuss that conflict and potential solutions.
  • New mental Care Program for Alaska. Senate Bill introduced February 11, 1955
  • Author was a psychiatrist. Major files deal with the Central Inspection Board, American Psychiatric Association (1954-1957); Morningside Hospital, Portland, Oregon (minutes of staff meetings, 1955-1958); North Pacific Society of Neurology and Psychiatry (1940-1950); Portland Psychiatrists in Private Practice (organization papers, 1955-1957). There is also correspondence about the beginnings of the Portland Chamber Orchestra Association (1947-1949).
